Spring courting

Rushing forward in bursts,
Head bobbing,
Purple pin-feathers puffed,
His fanned tail sweeps the ground
As pigeon purrs and coos his mating song.
He bows jerkily,
pirouettes to the left and to the right,
trying to engage a dance partner
in his pigeon pas-de-deux.
As he pursues and pursues,
she flees and flees,
finally taking wing to avoid his attentions.
Head cocked, clearly baffled,
Mr. Pigeon must begin again
at square one.
